Project Caloocan City Jail – Caloocan, Manila
Problems in Philippine prisons seem endless. The jails in Metro Manila are overcrowded by 410%. They house 22,000 inmates which is more prisoners than the official limit they can accommodate. At the Manila City Jail and other prisons in the National Capital Region, sleeping on the floor is scheduled by shifts. A shortage of judges and prosecutors to hear cases is also another major setback. With only two or three hearings a year, inmates’ trials can take years, even decades. To remind them that they are not alone and forgotten, Empower Philippines empowers the prisoners and celebrates important occasions with them, such as Christmas and holds medical, surgical, and dental missions to help relieve them a bit of their difficult plight. “I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.” (Matthew 25:36)
